Young caps have tiny particles which soon wear off. Shallow grooves run one-half way up the cap from the base. Stalk fragile, hollow to 6 cm high.

Cap up to 3 cm wide. Gills white when young turning dark brown then black with age. Gills partially dissolve at maturity. Grow in dense clusters on rotten wood.
