Note on Classification:
A dorsal view of a female syrphid in the subfamily Syrphinae. Identification based on information from BugGuide.net. Possibly a species in the look-alike genera Eupeodes or Syrphus.

You can tell this insect is a fly by the two paddle-shaped antennae on the front of the head. The widely spaced eyes, that don't touch along their margin, identify her as a female.

Non-biting and non-stinging, this female fly protects herself through the art of mimicry. She is one of many kinds of insects and syrphids that are expert wasp mimics. The bold black and yellow markings are a universally recognized warning sign.
