Syrphid

Syrphid

This handsome and beneficial insect is a female syrphid. The term syrphid refers to a large family of flies in the taxanomic group Syrphidae. Many visitors to Sanley Park know them as as flower or hover flies. This individual was identified as Toxomerus occidentalis using the visual key to common species of Toxomerus available from BugGuide.net

The buttercup provides the syrphid with both nectar and pollen in exchange for her valuable service in helping to cross-pollinate the flowers.
